Frequently Asked Questions

Who can do yoga?

Everyone can do yoga: whether you are muscular, stiff, stressed, flexible, joyful, depressed, dynamic, anxious, in a hurry, tired, shy... yoga is for you.

There are different styles of yoga, some gentler, some more dynamic, some more suitable for everyone.

At Joya Yoga Montréal, yoga adapts to the student, not the student to yoga.

Our team is here to listen to you and guide you towards the style that suits you best, according to your needs, desires and constraints.

Little by little, with us, you will learn to build a practice designed to find ever more balance.

What should I prepare for my first session?

Yoga is practiced barefoot.

Just plan for your rug, a space in a room in your house.

Choose light, flexible and comfortable clothing that allows you freedom of movement.

How does a session unfold?

Our yoga classes last from 45 to 60 minutes, our teachers arrive between 5 and 10 minutes to allow time for everyone to get settled.

A session is generally structured in three parts:

- a sequence of postures, more or less dynamic depending on the style of class, designed to awaken the joints and warm up the body. Each posture prepares for the next.

- postures that allow you to open up the body deeply and slow down your breathing.

- a final phase of relaxation.

Variations will be offered depending on each individual's abilities and limitations. Each student is encouraged to work at their own pace and to remain attentive to their sensations in the postures.

Which "yoga" should I start with?

If you are a beginner and have never practiced yoga before, opt for a Hatha Flow class which allows you to hold poses longer in order to learn your alignment, taking the time to combine breath with movement.

This style of Yoga allows for more frequent corrections due to the less intense pace.

If you have a regular practice and wish to deepen your practice, Vinyasa is dynamic and energizing, it will allow you to surpass yourself.

Yin yoga allows these practices to be broken up by a more introspective class and a deep stretch with postures held between 3 and 5 minutes.
